About
Variables is a 40-minute audio drama project focusing on trust issues and human reactions during highly hazardous situations and fear. In the Audio Drama, five characters will react differently based on their personalities. Will they be able to collaborate and escape the school? Can they solve the mystery beneath the surface? Story
Five high school students stay there for their reasons on an ordinary, dull school day. Before the final bell to leave campus, the school suddenly blacked out. When they ask for help, they find themselves trapped inside the school and dangers lurking around. Beneath the surface, a secret buried deep down starts to reveal itself. During their journey to escape, they have to choose between ignoring or facing the truth. Can they discover the long-hidden secret? Can they escape successfully in the end? Are the people besides them friends? Or enemy? A story about trust and individual choice begins here.
World Setting
“Variables” is based on the conspiracy of the government and big corporations are secretly performing experiments on ordinary citizens, studying their human behaviours through different methods and collecting various data from them, for example, controlling public opinions through certain celebrities and professionals, and initiating human subject research fields in certain cities.
In this project, we utilised these existing conspiracies and extremised them to create a world in which citizens are divided into two types, “the variables” that have been through some experiments and “the controlled variables” that have never been through any experiment. Also, selections of experiment subjects will be thrown into an experimental environment to test their behaviours for further studies. Certain characters will exhibit extreme behaviours in this setting, while others will not.
Medium
The story will be told through a 50-60 minute audio drama. Changing the characters' perspectives and conversations will reveal the hidden mystery and story to the listeners layer by layer. With the dialogue and the sound effects, an immersive listening experience can be created for the audience.
Research
Since “Variables” will lean towards thriller and horror aspects, research on the story flow and general vibe has been done to obtain inspiration. Research is conducted in three significant areas: Story plot, Music style, Sound recording and Effects.
